Local residents near a wet mill in southern Ethiopian mountains were not often regular smokers. Given that the local income was less than $30/month, and cigarettes cost between 65 cents and $2 per pack, it seemed rare that someone became a regular smoker. However, a cigarette was always a great ice-breaker even with someone that I couldn't speak english with.
